This Is The Cardboard Sign A 12-Year-Old Had To Wear Around His Neck As Punishment From Parents (Photo)

The parents of a 12-year-old boy who was suspended from school for bullying younger students decided to teach him a lesson with an unusual punishment.

Feeling that suspension wasn’t enough, Amber Carey made her son Gage Duncan, who attends George Washington Intermediate School in New Castle, Pa, stand on various street corners around town with a sign around his neck.

The sign reads: “My name is Gage, and I am a bully.”

“This is my way of teaching him that bullying is not acceptable,” Carey said. “It’s not right to pick on somebody else. He embarrassed them, so this is his embarrassment for himself.”

Gage stood at several street corners around town with the sign Wednesday as his parents and their two younger children sat nearby in their parked SUV. The sixth grader told KDKA-TV he was remorseful.

“I think I’m not going to do it again. I’m going to apologize to the principal, and to the children I did it to,” Gage said.

But there were some onlookers who disagreed with the parents’ methods, according to Carey. A few people who passed by called the police, accusing them of child abuse. Police came, spoke to the couple before allowing Gage to continue standing with his sign.

“Too often we see children taking their own lives due to bullying and we refuse to allow our son to take part in that,” the mother said. “If more parents would get involved, together we can instill morals and respect into the generation created and prevent more of situations from reoccurring.”

Carey said Gage would be outside with his cardboard sign again later this week, if weather permits.
