A Louisville, Ky., man was arrested for allegedly assaulting his daughter after he discovered explicit photographs of her on her cell phone.
Tate D. Rhodes allegedly slapped his 17-year-old on her face and legs, pulled her hair, dragged her around the house and made her wear a burlap sack, according to Louisville Metro Police.
He was arraigned on June 20 and ordered not to have contact with his daughter, WAVE 3 reported. Bond was set at $5,000.
Top commenters on WAVE 3 appeared to support Rhodes’ actions.
“I respect him for caring!!!” said Ben Jackson.
“It's a shame that he was put in jail for punishing his daughter,” wrote Connie Blessit. “I think more parents should care what their children are doing and maybe babies wouldn't be having babies!!!!”
“She would be finding a new home if she put me in jail,” wrote Troy Reed.
“Why is he in jail? I would have disciplined my kid too,” wrote Chrystal Schank. “People wonder why kids are so bad. It's because the law doesn't allow you to discipline. Let's just let them get pregnant and do whatever they want with no consequences."
A recent study found that there is a double standard when it comes to teen sexting, and girls are judged more harshly, Salon reported.
A review of the literature from Julia R. Lippman and Scott W. Campbell found that sexting isn’t as common as previously thought, and that boys and girls tend to sext equally.
A girl's reputation is more negatively impacted by sexting. Respondents told researchers girls who sext look “slutty,” appear desperate and often have their photos distributed to others without their permission.
While boys in the study say they actively solicit these images, they also made negative comments about the girls who complied with their requests.
“This is common only for girls with ‘slut’ reputations,” said an 18-year-old male participant. “They do it to attract attention … [it’s inappropriate, but] it’s the fault of the girl who sent them. That she is being seen like that.”
“I have received some pics that include nudity,” said a 14-year-old boy. “Girls will send them sometimes, not often. I don’t know why they think it’s a good idea but I’m not going to stop it … I like classy girls so I don’t like them as much anymore it makes them look slutty.”
