Police in Prince George’s County, Maryland, have released the video below showing gunman Deon Warren, 19, as he shoots into a crowd that includes Mitchell White III. Warren’s fire would hit and kill White.
Warren has been found guilty of murder, sentenced to 30 years in prison, must register with authorities as a gun offender, and serve five years probation after his release.
The incident occurred on September 30, 2014. As WUSA9 reports, White was a 39-year-old father who was at the scene to break up a fight that included his 16 year-old-son.
The fight took place at the Bel Air Swim Club in Bowie, Maryland, and several spectators watched and filmed the event.
As the video shows, Warren enters the scene brandishing a handgun. Prince George’s County attorney John Erzen said, “He brought a gun to a fist fight that he had nothing to do with.”
As the video continues, Warren begins yelling at several members of the crowd and pointing his pistol at them. Mitchell White appears to stand-up to the man as the crowd scatters.
White sustained a gunshot to the upper body and died at the scene. The Daily Mail UK reports that White’s family found out about his death via Twitter.
Warren later turned himself in and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, WJLA reports. Authorities identified him by the tattoos on his face.
Mitchell White was the father of two, one of whom, 16, was involved in the fight, and the other 14. White was an Amtrak ticket agent, patriarch of a large extended family, and was planning a wedding in the Bahamas to his finance Tanya Wright.
WUSA9 quotes Wright’s letter to the court, “Mitchell was an angel on earth and Deon Warren stole my angel.”
Warren told the court, “I hope and pray that you all forgive me.”
In addition to the video, an Instagram photo of Warren with the same handgun was used to prosecute him.
