ER Nurse Makes Horrifying Discovery While Trying To Help Patient

An ER nurse made a heartbreaking discovery this week when she realized that the hit-and-run victim she was trying to save was her own brother.

Jenifer Medina was working a busy shift at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center when she was told a man was admitted "in bad shape."

She was asked to identify the patient by his wallet and was horrified to see that it was her own brother, Cesar.

Cesar Andreas "Andy" Medina was struck with a car  while skateboarding through a crosswalk in Laguna Niguel, California, Friday. Police say he had the right of way when he was hit.

The driver got away after the crash and authorities began a manhunt.

When Cesar arrived at the hospital, Jenifer was asked to identify the patient, who was first registered as 'John Doe.' Before even seeing her brother's identification, she knew that something already seemed wrong.

“When I saw the wallet it looked familiar, and when we [opened] it [we] saw my brother’s face on the ID,” she wrote on a GoFundMe page she set up in her brother's memory.

Jenifer told NBC LA that her world collapsed at that moment.

“I just knew I wanted to say my last goodbyes to Andy after they cleaned him up,” Medina said. “And tell him how much I love him.”

Doctors were unable to save her brother, unfortunately, and he died at the hospital.

On Saturday, the driver who hit Cesar was caught and arrested by sheriff's deputies.

Andrew Michaels, 19, is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run and is being held on $100,000 bail.
