Family Makes Disturbing Discovery In Hotel Room During Vacation (Photos)

A Kentucky woman says her daughters were so badly bitten by bed bugs while staying at a Florida resort that the family had to cut their vacation short.

Christina Streble said she and her family were staying at Oak Plantation Resort in Kissimmee earlier this month when her daughters started noticing red bites all over their arms, WESH News reports.

Streble said she originally thought the bites were from mosquitoes, but as the girls continued to get bit, she decided to strip the beds, overturn the mattresses and look for bed bugs.

That’s exactly what she found.

“[We] captured a few, put them in a baggie, at 1 o’clock in the morning, we went straight down to the front desk, put 'em up on the counter and told them we have bed bugs,” she said during a Skype interview with WKMG.

The family checked out of the hotel, filed a complaint with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and returned home to Louisville.

“The doctor there said it was the worst case of bed bugs he'd ever seen,” she told WKMG.

“We counted 266 bites on my oldest daughter, 125 bites on my middle child. They were red and inflamed,” Streble added.

She said the family stayed at the resort from June 13 to June 19, but her daughters are still recovering from the bites.

“It's been a nightmare,” Streble said. “[The kids are] having a hard time sleeping, they keep thinking that something's crawling on them.”

Documents, obtained by WESH, indicate a state official did inspect the room and confirmed the presence of live bed bugs. Those documents also showed that the resort had begun pest treatments of the room on June 24.

Grace Velez, a spokeswoman for the resort, insisted the Streble family’s experience was an isolated incident.

“We are a 242-unit property,” Velez told WESH. “Last weekend, we were at 96 percent occupancy, and this is the only complaint that came out of this resort, so we are a great family friendly resort with a great staff close to Disney, so please don't let this scare you off.”

Inspectors also found bed bugs in one other unit, according to WKMG.

Oak Plantation has until July 14 to get rid of the bed bugs or the resort will face fines ranging from $250 to $1,000, according to inspectors. Guests are not allowed to stay in the affected rooms until the deadline.

Since 2013, only two other complaints for alleged bed bugs have been filed against the resort. In both of those cases, the state inspector did not find any of the pests, according to WESH.
