A Family's Joy Turns To Sadness After 56-Year-Old Gives Birth To Twins

In her 56 years of life, Dr. Lisa Swinton McLaughlin of Baltimore, Maryland, accomplished more than most can in two lifetimes.

According to Omaha.com, Lisa had a bachelor’s degree in U.S. and modern European history, was a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society and won the Spirit of Creighton Award.

After her graduation from Creighton University law school, she was a Nebraska special assistant attorney general for 13 years. She then graduated with her doctorate in medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and served as the medical director for the American Red Cross in Baltimore, Maryland.

However, for the last 30 years, she wanted to be a mother. “She wanted what every other woman had, and that’s children,” said her husband, Mike McLaughlin, 67.

Finally, at age 56, Lisa became pregnant with twins.

It took a decade of fertility treatments and in-vitro procedures, but on Dec. 27, 2014, she gave birth to sons Jordan and Dylan via cesarean section. Though the twins were premature and remained in neonatal intensive care after she returned home, they were healthy.

“She was just on cloud nine,” Mike said. “That’s the happiest I’ve probably seen her in my life.”

Tragically, Lisa died a week later.

Though Lisa suffered from gestational diabetes and she was put on bed rest a month before she gave birth, she died on Jan. 4 due to a bowel obstruction.

“[Death] wasn’t even in her vocabulary,” Mike said. “She held the babies and was able to stroke them and love them.”

Mike is now facing the prospect of raising the twins alone. He said he’ll move home to Nebraska to be close to his friends and family.

“My wife lived her life as stated by Maya Angelou: ‘My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive, and do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style,’” Mike said.
