Ben Carson: Rape And Incest Victims Should Not Be Allowed To Have Abortions

Ben Carson speaking at CPAC 2014 in Washington, DC

Ben Carson said that victims of rape or incest should not have the option to legally pursue abortion.

On Oct. 25, the retired neurosurgeon told Chuck Todd of NBC's "Meet the Press" that there is "room to discuss" allowing an abortion in the "extraordinarily rare situation" that the mother's life or health is in danger.

“I'm a reasonable person and if people can come up with a reasonable explanation of why they would like to kill a baby, I'll listen," he said on the program.

However, he is absolutely not in favor of  allowing pregnant rape and incest survivors to have the option of abortion.

"Rape and incest, I would not be in favor of killing a baby because the baby came about in that way," Carson said. "And all you have to do is go and look up the many stories of people who have led very useful lives who are the result of rape or incest."

Rape, incest, and other forms of sexual violence often lead to serious, long term mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and flashbacks, according to CDC. Survivors of sexual violence often struggle to engage in healthy behavior and can develop patterns of criminal behavior. The social and familial impacts of sexual violence can be devastating and cause turmoil within those spheres.

Despite whatever degree of suffering the mother would face, she should follow through with her pregnancy, indicated Carson, the second most popular GOP candidate, according to NBC.

"In the ideal situation, the mother should not believe that the baby is her enemy, and should not be looking to terminate the baby," he said, when asked whether the mother or fetus has greater rights. "You know, things are set up in a such a way that the person in the world who has the greatest interest in protecting the baby is the mother.

"We’ve allowed the purveyors of division to make mothers think that baby is their enemy and they have a right to kill it," he continued. "Can you see how perverted that line of thinking is?"
