A recent photo of two Texas police officers responding to the “Black Lives Matter” movement went viral on social media last Monday.
The picture depicts a white police officer and a black police officer from Trinity Police Department in East Texas. Each has “His Life Matters” written on a hand, with an arrow pointing to the other officer.
According to KTRE, the photo first surfaced on May 6, when Trinity Police Department posted it on their Twitter feed; however, it only gained mass attention when the American Conservatives of Color Facebook page shared it on August 10 with the caption “RIGHT ON, brothers!!”
As of Friday, Facebook users have shared the striking image more than 119,000 times and more than 27,500 people have hit the “like” button.
In 2014, police killed more than 100 unarmed black people, according to the website Mapping Police Violence. BlackLivesMatter.com states that, on average, law enforcement kills one African American every 28 hours.
Grassroots activists created the “Black Lives Matter” movement in 2012 after a jury acquitted George Zimmerman for the death of unarmed Trayvon Martin. The movement seeks to call attention to and change racial profiling and police brutality directed at African Americans.
“Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our de-humanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society,” the website says.
Many groups have reacted to “Black Lives Matter” with their own “All Lives Matter” campaigns and social media hashtags.
The Facebook picture of Jones and Givens putting their own spin on the counter-movement has sparked impassioned debates on both sides.
“All lives matter but the thing is people haven't been acting that way,” wrote Jamie Elizabeth Haalboom. “There wouldn't be a black lives matter movement if we didn't NEED to have one.”
“ALL LIVES MATTER!!!” commented Facebook user Kristi Herbert on the American Conservatives of Color photo. “You don’t want to be bothered by a cop… don’t F up! That goes for any and all colors of skin. Any and ALL religions and beliefs! We are ALL important!!!"
