On Tuesday, police arrested a Texas man accused of pouring hydrochloric acid all over a dog's face, in what Animal Care Services has called the worst case of animal abuse ever seen in San Antonio, Texas.
The San Antonio Current reports that officials have charged 45-year-old Ignacio Sanchez Alvarez with felony cruelty to a non-livestock animal and may also add charges of animal cruelty for failing to render adequate care.
Authorities have accused Alvarez of pouring hydrochloric acid over 100 percent of pit bull Rosie's face. The acid burned off one ear and part of the other, and it also damaged her eyes.
"Her call started like many others we get through a phone call from a citizen, an anonymous complaint with some information that a dog needed assistance," animal cruelty specialist Audra Houghton of the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services told USA Today.
According to Houghton, Rosie was most likely abused with the acid at the end of July. She probably went weeks with receiving medical care for her severe burns. It is not known whether Rosie belonged to Alvarez or what their relationship was. The investigation is ongoing, Houghton said.
Rosie is scheduled to undergo restorative eye surgery next week, thanks to an outpouring of support. When the shelter posted Rosie's story on Facebook, after donations rushed in from the community. Within 48 hours, the shelter had received more than enough for the estimated cost of her surgery.
"Rosie's story has gone worldwide, and the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services has received numerous phone calls, emails, and messages of support from around the world," the shelter posted on Facebook.
Rosie gives new meaning to the notion of a "brave pit bull." According to Lisa Norwood, a spokeswoman for the shelter, Rosie has stayed extremely strong throughout the horrifying ordeal.
"I think she is well on her way to healing and a happy home," Norwood said. "She is a very sweet and gentle girl."
