Residents Finally Learn Why Their Cats Kept Vanishing One By One

Police in Port St. Lucie, Fla., caught a 12-foot python that neighbors claim has been eating cats in the area.

Port Lucie Police Sgt. John Holman found a dead cat in an empty lot when he responded to a call around 7:20 a.m. on Friday. Holman walked waist deep into high brush and found a Burmese python.

He called for backup to remove the 120-pound snake from the brush, WTSP reported. Holman said the snake has probably been feeding on raccoons and cats.

"We do know that there are a lot of missing cats in that neighborhood, and probably possums and raccoons," he said.

Pythons are an invasive species in the state of Florida, where snakes have been released into the wild by pet owners. The Everglades now hosts a booming population of the snakes, which can grow up to 20 feet long. Researching say pythons are annihilating the Everglades’ native mammals, New York Daily News reported.

Owning or selling pythons as pets is now prohibited in the state.
