Judge Hands Down Unexpected Sentence To Man Who Raped 11-Year-Old

Steven Bradford, 22, was convicted of raping a 11-year-old girl in Aug. 2013, in Johnson County, Kansas.

However, Johnson County Judge James Franklin Davis sentenced Bradford to only three years of probation and a suspended eight-year jail sentence (video below).

Bradford was released to a county residential center on Tuesday night.

According to, the girl and her foster sister, 17, sneaked outside their apartment to meet two guys; one was Bradford. His defense lawyers claimed the 11-year-old girl told Bradford that she was 16 years old.

Weeks later, the girl told her foster father that she had sex with Bradford, which led to the police being called.

Johnson County prosecutors allowed Bradford to plea no contest to the rape of an adult. The prosecutors mistakenly thought that he would get fifteen years in jail.

“I couldn't believe it. My mouth dropped open. I just, I was in total shock,” the victim’s foster father, who chose not to reveal his name to protect his foster daughter's identity, told 41 Action News. “I just thought that this was a total miscarriage of justice.”

There will be a court hearing later this month to possibly change the sentencing of Bradford.

“My message to the judge would be: Do the right thing for my daughter and for the community," added the foster father. "Send this guy to prison for some length of time to show him that because he was naive or whatever, he was a grown adult. He needs to take responsibility for what he did."
