'Alien-Like' Animal Found Fleeing Attackers (Photos)

An “alien-like” bear with a mysterious illness was rescued after video (posted below) surfaced two months ago of it fleeing attackers in the village of Sibu in Borneo.

The video, posted in late January, shows the bear running away from the men filming. The men had allegedly been beating it with sticks because they were uncertain of what kind of animal it was.  The video garnered over five million views since it was uploaded.

It was later determined that the animal was an endangered sun bear suffering from an illness. A team of rescuers from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) began a search for the bear after the video went viral, and finally located it this week.

“The bear is in a good and safe place,” SFC spokesperson Nickson Robi said. “She has eaten the food and drank the water we gave. But she still is hairless and sick, and we need to find out what the sickness is.”

The ailing bear is now in the custody of the SFC, and while she is reportedly “aggressive” and “frightened,” she is getting the help and attention she so desperately needs. “I just took the bear to our wildlife center here,” Robi said. “A veterinarian there will check up on everything to find what medication should be given to the bear. We are hoping that the bear will recover quickly, so we can put her back to the wild."
