Woman Returns From War, Gets Bad News Regarding Her Children

A military mother from Florida spent years fighting for her country to provide for her children and now she is fighting to regain custody of them (video below).

Amanda Hurst joined the U.S. Army to create a better life for her children and herself. She was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and left her two children in the care of her stepmother.

Her children were 7 and 8 years old when she was deployed.

Hurst fought in Afghanistan and Iraq and just before she was honorably discharged in 2013, her stepmother moved to New Jersey with her children.

The children ended up in the care of New Jersey's Department of Children and Families because of their special needs.

The state reportedly took custody of the children because her daughter had discipline issues and her son became aggressive toward his step-grandmother.

The children are currently in foster care.

"I want my kids back," Hurst said. "I wanna be with my kids. I've missed so much of their lives serving my country that I don't wanna miss anymore."

The state of New Jersey agrees that the children should be with their mother, but it has conditions. The condition is that the services being provided to the children in New Jersey should continue in Florida.

Although the request is fairly simple, the process of getting to the point Hurst is at today has taken years of effort.

Hurst said that she wants her children to know when they are older that she never gave up on them.

This week a hearing is scheduled to determine if and when Hurst's children will return to Florida with her.
