A Cambridge, Massachusetts restaurant chef and owner took matters into his own hands when two unruly customers threatened him with a bad Yelp review.
It all started when chef Michael Scelfo posted a photo to Instagram of two young women, complete with an explanatory caption.
“Shout out to these two winners for seating themselves with no reservations, insulting and berating our staff refusing to leave and all the while yelping away in front of us as a means of threat. #kbye#wedontnegotiatewithyelpers,” the caption read.
“It’s one thing to be entitled, but mistreat my family. Hell no,” he later added.
Scelfo later elaborated on his original post, saying that the staff felt as though the only two options in dealing with the unruly customers were to either call the police or “kill them with kindness until they left.” Scelfo said that the Instagram post was intended to shed light on the “online review system & entitlement mentality.”
“We tried to have them leave, they refused. Taking their drink away and being forceful is not hospitable,” he wrote in a follow-up post. “We as a team endured a ton of abuse but ultimately chose the high road.”
Although there was some negative reaction to Scelfo’s Instagram shaming, the majority of responses from people across social media were in support of the chef.
“Everyone should give @mscelfo and his resto @AldenHarlow as much business as they can! #wedontnegotiatewithyelpers,” Twitter user Ricky Ross said.
“Stand up for something, or you stand for nothing,” Scelfo later wrote.
