The Indian government has ordered Google and Apple to take down the TikTok app from their app market. The Chinese video app TikTok is no longer available to download in India from those markets. TikTok has been banned in the neighboring country Bangladesh and hit with a large fine in the United States.
After a high court in Chennai called for the ban on 3 April, Google blocked access to TikTok in its Play store in India to comply with the court’s directive. Developer Bytedance challenged the state court’s ban order in the Supreme Court last week.
The app claims to have 500 million users worldwide including more than 120 million in India. More than 30 million users installed the app in January 2019. The company employs more than 250 people in India and had plans for more investment to expand its business.
