On Friday night, in an industrial complex in Lake County, Illinois after a “ground-shaking” explosion and fire break out one person died and two are still missing.
Officials said at a Saturday morning press conference the explosion and ensuing fire left the silicone manufacturing plant where the blast occurred extremely unstable for crews to continue the search.
Waukegan Police Commander Joe Florip said in addition to the two missing and one dead four workers were transported to the hospital from the scene with “moderate injuries” after the explosion.
Authorities determined at the time of the explosion nine people were inside the building. Two remained unaccounted for after the body of one employee was found Saturday morning.
Waukegan Fire Marshal Steven Lenzi said, “As the evening went on we realized there was more hazardous materials involved, we realized we were going to have to be searching in a building with 90 percent damage to it.”
Police have confirmed the explosion took place at AB Specialty Silicones, a manufacturing and distribution company specializing in silicone-based materials.
